Chapter Ten

It was midafternoon by the time we set off on our recon mission, and the air was a comfortable cool temperature. We still had several before the sun would go down, but I’d briefed Rumi and Joe that we might have to sleep rough tonight. None of us knew what kind of terrain the east lands had, and I just hoped we’d be able to find some shelter and safety when the time came.

I’d also been a little unsure about a team of three rowing across another stretch of water, but Rumi insisted she had a plan. When I asked her to enlighten me on what her master plan was, she gave me a cheeky wink and told me to trust her.

I wasn’t too keen on just leaving things in someone else’s hands, even if those hands were Rumi’s dangerous and powerful claws. But I did trust her, and her body language reeked of confidence, so I thought I’d give her the benefit of the doubt.

Joe and I had reloaded our Glocks and stashed a couple of backup mags in our pockets, and I also had a shotgun slung over my shoulder with a box of shells. I wasn’t sure what we were getting into, but I felt like the three of us could handle it.

We strolled through Pyregate and into the rolling fields and patchy woodlands on the east side, and as we drew closer to Chantara’s hillside hideaway, I recalled the memory of our first time together and smiled to myself. It felt like so long since we’d last relaxed on her big round bed, and I wondered if she missed her home.

Perhaps she didn’t miss it, though. It was a lovely little home, with ornaments and silk wall hangings that she’d collected over the years to make it cozy, but it was still a hidden little place with no windows. Chantara had been forced into hiding for her own safety, and it looked like she’d made the best of it. But those times were over now, she never needed to hide herself from the world again, so maybe it was time for her to find a home she could live in proudly.

I let my mind wander as we walked toward the east coast, and I tried to think about where we could settle when the war was over. I liked the ogres’ treehouses, especially the mansions in the north forest. They could be a great place for little phoenixes to try and fly from. But I also wanted something of our own. Something large enough for all my women and any future kids, and somewhere we could all gaze out onto a beautiful bit of scenery.

There were so many stunning places around here, I figured it would just be a matter of picking one and building my dream home on it. Maybe the dwarves could lend me some magic, and I could create a hidden world for my women and I to grow old in.

“What’s that smile for, sugar?” Rumi broke through my daydreaming and cocked her head to one side.
